Directions: |
Take Highway 50 to Ice House Road. Head north on
Ice House for about 17 miles until you reach the turnoff for Van Vleck Bunkhouse (Cheese Camp Road.)
Follow this road for a little over 5 miles until you get to the Van Vleck Trailhead parking area. |
Hazards of
Note: |
Off-trail route finding necessary to find the postpile area as foundations(s) of the old buildings. |
|
Crowd Factor: |
You will possibly meet up with people heading into Desolation Wilderness along the first part of the hike. Once you leave the trail you will run into nobody. |
General Notes: From the parking area head back up to the main trail just to the south of the Van Vleck Bunkhouse area. Follow the path to the east, the Van Vleck Trail, and within a 1/2 mile it will bend to the north. Once you pass the junction for the trail that will eventually lead to Loon Lake, head off-trail to the west until you reach the postpiles. These can be climbed as they extend a little bit to the west here. Dropping down at the end, you should be able to find foundations from the old Cheese manufacturing buildings south of the postpile area. Take Highway 50 to Ice House Road. Head north on Ice House for about 17 miles until you reach the turnoff for Van Vleck Bunkhouse (Cheese Camp Road.) Follow this road for a little over 5 miles until you get to the Van Vleck Trailhead parking area. |

What is locally known as the "sword in the stone." It has been here for a very long time and none of us was worthy on this day.
